Davis was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, on April 5, 1908. Her parents were Ruth Augusta (née Favor) and Harlow Morrell Davis. Her father was a lawyer and her mother was a piano teacher. Davis had one older sister, Ruth Elizabeth. She attended the Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Massachusetts and the John Murray Anderson School for the Dramatic Arts in New York City. She made her Broadway debut in 1929 in the play "Broken Dishes."
