History

The idea for the Special Publication originated in the early 1990s, when the Library of America was considering ways to expand its publishing program beyond its core series of American Classics. The editors of the Library of America believed that there were a number of important works of American literature that did not fit into the Classic series, either because they were too long, too specialized, or too recently published. The Special Publication was created to provide a home for these works, and to offer readers a deeper understanding of the American literary tradition.

The first volume of the Special Publication was published in 2003, and it featured the complete works of Walt Whitman. Since then, the Special Publication has published a wide range of works by American authors, including novels, short stories, poetry, plays, and essays. The Special Publication has also published a number of special editions, such as the Library of America's first Spanish-language volume, *La Casa en Mango Street* by Sandra Cisneros, and the Library of America's first volume of Native American literature, *The Norton Anthology of Native American Literature*.

Editorial Principles

The Library of America Special Publication is edited according to the same high standards as the Library of America Classic series. The texts of the works are based on the most authoritative sources, and they are carefully annotated to provide readers with a deeper understanding of the work and its context. The s to the volumes are written by leading scholars, and they provide a comprehensive overview of the work, its author, and its place in American literature.

Notable Authors and Works

The Library of America Special Publication has published works by some of the most important authors in American literature, including:

* Walt Whitman * Herman Melville * Mark Twain * Henry James * Edith Wharton * F. Scott Fitzgerald * William Faulkner * Toni Morrison * Cormac McCarthy

The Special Publication has also published a number of wichtigen Werke von lesser-known authors, such as:

* Zora Neale Hurston * Willa Cather * Theodore Dreiser * Sinclair Lewis * John Dos Passos * Flannery O'Connor

The Library of America Special Publication is a valuable resource for anyone interested in American literature. The Special Publication provides authoritative texts of some of the most important works in the American canon, and it offers a deeper understanding of the American literary tradition. The Special Publication is a must-have for any serious student of American literature.
