Early Life
George Remus was born in Germany in 1878. He immigrated to the United States with his family when he was a young child. Remus settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he attended school and eventually became a pharmacist.
In 1919, Prohibition was enacted in the United States. This made it illegal to manufacture, sell, or transport alcoholic beverages. Remus saw an opportunity to make a fortune by bootlegging alcohol.
Bootlegging Empire
Remus quickly established himself as one of the most successful bootleggers in the country. He had a network of suppliers and distributors that stretched from Canada to Mexico. Remus also owned several speakeasies, where people could go to drink alcohol illegally.
Remus's bootlegging empire made him a very wealthy man. He lived a lavish lifestyle, complete with a mansion, a fleet of cars, and a bevy of beautiful women. Remus also enjoyed throwing lavish parties, where he would often entertain guests with his own brand of moonshine.
Ruthless Business Practices
Remus was a ruthless businessman. He was known for his violent temper and his willingness to use intimidation and violence to get what he wanted. Remus was also known for his double-crossings and betrayals. He often made deals with other bootleggers, only to turn on them later.
Murder
In 1921, Remus's wife, Imogene, was found dead in their home. Remus was initially charged with murder, but the charges were later dropped due to lack of evidence. However, many people believe that Remus did kill his wife.
In 1927, Remus was convicted of conspiracy to violate the Prohibition laws. He was sentenced to two years in prison. Remus served his sentence at Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary.
Later Life
After his release from prison, Remus returned to Cincinnati. He tried to start a new business, but he was unsuccessful. Remus died in 1952, at the age of 74.
Legacy
George Remus was one of the most notorious criminals of the Prohibition era. He was known for his flamboyant lifestyle, his ruthless business practices, and his alleged murder of his wife. Remus's story has been told in numerous books, movies, and television shows. He remains a fascinating figure in American history.
