Albert Luthuli was born on December 23, 1898, in Bulawayo, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). He was the son of a Zulu chief, and he grew up in a traditional Zulu village. Luthuli was educated at a mission school and later at a teacher training college. He began his teaching career in 1917, and he quickly became known for his dedication to his students and his commitment to social justice.
In 1936, Luthuli joined the African National Congress (ANC),a political organization that fought against the apartheid system of racial segregation and discrimination. Luthuli quickly rose through the ranks of the ANC, and he became president of the organization in 1952. During his time as president, Luthuli led the ANC in a series of non-violent protests against apartheid. He was arrested and imprisoned several times, but he never gave up his fight for justice.

He was the first African to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, and his award brought international attention to the apartheid system. Luthuli continued to fight against apartheid until his death in 1967.
