Held At Distance My Rediscovery Of Ethiopia
I had always dreamt of visiting Ethiopia. The country's rich history, diverse culture, and stunning landscapes had captivated my imagination since I was a child. But for years, it seemed like an impossible dream. Ethiopia was a faraway land, plagued by war and famine. It was a place that seemed both alluring and out of reach.
But in 2018, things began to change. Ethiopia elected a new Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, who promised to bring peace and reform to the country. I started to hear positive reports about the country, and I began to believe that my dream of visiting Ethiopia might finally come true.

In 2019, I booked a ticket to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital. I was filled with excitement and anticipation, but also with a sense of trepidation. I had heard that Ethiopia was a challenging country to travel in, and I wasn't sure what to expect.
When I arrived in Addis Ababa, I was immediately struck by the city's energy and vitality. The streets were filled with people going about their daily lives, and the air was filled with the sound of music and laughter.
I spent the next few days exploring Addis Ababa. I visited the National Museum, where I learned about Ethiopia's ancient history. I strolled through the Merkato, one of the largest open-air markets in Africa. And I visited the Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of the most important religious sites in the country.
After a few days in Addis Ababa, I boarded a plane to Lalibela, a small town in the north of Ethiopia. Lalibela is home to 11 monolithic churches, which were carved out of a single piece of rock in the 12th and 13th centuries. The churches are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and they are one of the most beeindruckend religious sites in the world.
I spent two days exploring the churches of Lalibela. I marveled at their intricate carvings and their beautiful frescoes. I also had the opportunity to attend a religious service in one of the churches. It was a moving experience, and it gave me a deeper understanding of the importance of religion in Ethiopian culture.
After Lalibela, I traveled to the Simien Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Simien Mountains are home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in Ethiopia. I hiked through the mountains for several days, and I was amazed by the stunning views. I saw jagged peaks, lush valleys, and cascading waterfalls. I also saw a variety of wildlife, including monkeys, baboons, and ibex.
My journey through Ethiopia was an unforgettable experience. I was amazed by the country's beauty, its history, and its culture. I also met some wonderful people along the way. The Ethiopians were warm and welcoming, and they went out of their way to make me feel at home.
I left Ethiopia with a heavy heart. I had fallen in love with the country and its people, and I knew that I would never forget my time there. I also left with a newfound appreciation for the power of travel. Travel can open our minds and hearts, and it can help us to see the world in a new way.
If you have ever dreamed of visiting Ethiopia, I encourage you to make it a reality. It is a truly special country, and it will change your life in ways that you never imagined.
