Nadine Ramsey was born in 1980 in Harlem, New York City. Growing up, she was fascinated by airplanes, but never imagined she could actually become a pilot. It wasn't until she joined the Air Force ROTC program at North Carolina A&T State University that she began to seriously consider a career in aviation.

Ramsey excelled in the ROTC program and earned her wings in 2003. She was then assigned to fly the C-17 Globemaster III, a massive cargo aircraft. Her ability to master the complex systems of the C-17 and her exceptional leadership skills quickly earned her recognition.

Historic Flight Across the Atlantic

In 2013, Ramsey made history when she became the first African American woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. The flight, which took her from Washington, D.C., to Dakar, Senegal, was a testament to her unwavering determination and her love of flying.

The journey was not without its challenges. Ramsey encountered strong winds, thunderstorms, and at one point, had to fly blind for over an hour. But she remained composed and focused throughout the ordeal, ultimately completing the historic flight in 15 hours and 30 minutes.

Advocacy and Education

Ramsey's accomplishments in aviation have made her a powerful advocate for diversity and inclusion in the field. She is a sought-after speaker and mentor, sharing her story with countless aspiring pilots and young people interested in STEM careers.

Ramsey is particularly passionate about promoting aviation education among underrepresented groups. She has partnered with organizations like the National Aviation Academy and the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP) to support scholarships, mentorship programs, and other initiatives that aim to increase diversity in aviation.

Mentoring the Next Generation

Ramsey believes that it is essential to pass on her knowledge and experience to the next generation of pilots. She actively mentors young people who aspire to careers in aviation, providing guidance, support, and inspiration.

One of her most notable mentees is Samantha Fuentes, a young woman who flew with Ramsey during the Atlantic crossing. Fuentes, who was a 17-year-old high school student at the time, was deeply inspired by Ramsey's story and went on to pursue a career in aviation. She is now a commercial airline pilot.

Legacy of Inspiration

Nadine Ramsey's journey has been marked by extraordinary achievements and an unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion in aviation. Her accomplishments have shattered barriers and inspired countless young people to pursue their dreams.

Ramsey's legacy is not just one of a pioneering pilot but also of an advocate, mentor, and role model. She continues to use her voice and platform to promote access to aviation and STEM education for all, ensuring that future generations have the opportunity to reach for the skies.
