Edward Doheny was one of the most powerful and controversial oil tycoons in American history. His life was a story of triumph and scandal, marked by both great success and personal tragedy.
Early Life and Career
Edward Laurence Doheny was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, in 1856. His father was a farmer and his mother was a schoolteacher. Doheny left home at a young age to seek his fortune in the West. He worked as a miner, a cowboy, and a gambler before he finally settled in Los Angeles in 1892.
In Los Angeles, Doheny met Charles Canfield, a wealthy oilman who would become his mentor. Doheny quickly learned the oil business and soon became one of the most successful oilmen in California. In 1901, he founded the Pan American Petroleum and Transport Company, which would become one of the largest oil companies in the world.
The Teapot Dome Scandal
In 1921, Doheny became embroiled in the Teapot Dome scandal, one of the most notorious political scandals in American history. The scandal involved the illegal leasing of federal oil reserves to private oil companies. Doheny was accused of bribing government officials in order to secure the leases. He was acquitted of the charges, but the scandal tarnished his reputation and led to his downfall.
Personal Life
Doheny was married three times. His first two marriages ended in divorce. In 1900, he married Carrie Estelle Betzold, who would be his lifelong companion. The couple had two children, Edward Jr. and Eleanor.
Doheny was a complex and contradictory figure. He was a brilliant businessman who made a fortune in the oil industry. He was also a generous philanthropist who donated millions of dollars to various charities. However, he was also a ruthless and ambitious man who was willing to do whatever it took to succeed.
Death and Legacy
Edward Doheny died in Los Angeles in 1935. He was 78 years old. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles. Doheny's legacy is mixed.
