The Deaths of Three Presidents
The first president to die in 1920 was Woodrow Wilson. Wilson had been in poor health for several years, and he suffered a stroke in September 1919. He died on February 3, 1920, at the age of 67.
The next president to die was Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt had been suffering from a variety of health problems, including heart disease and asthma. He died on January 6, 1919, at the age of 60.
The third president to die in 1920 was William Howard Taft. Taft had been suffering from a heart condition for several years. He died on March 8, 1930, at the age of 72.
The Election of 1920
The 1920 presidential election was one of the most bitter in American history. The Republican candidate, Warren G. Harding, ran on a platform of "normalcy" and promised to return the country to the pre-war status quo. The Democratic candidate, James M. Cox, ran on a platform of progressivism and promised to continue the reforms of Woodrow Wilson.
The election was close, but Harding ultimately won by a landslide. He received 60% of the popular vote and 404 electoral votes. Cox received only 34% of the popular vote and 127 electoral votes.
Harding's Presidency
Harding's presidency was a disappointment to many. He was not a strong leader, and he allowed his friends and associates to run the government. His administration was plagued by corruption and scandal, and he died in office in August 1923.
The year 1920 was a turning point in American history. The deaths of three presidents and the election of Warren G. Harding marked the end of the Progressive Era and the beginning of a new era of conservatism.
