William Tecumseh Sherman was a complex and controversial figure. He was a brilliant military strategist who led the Union Army to victory in the Civil War, but he was also known for his ruthless tactics. Sherman's legacy is still debated today, but there is no doubt that he was one of the most important figures in American history.

Early Life and Career

Sherman was born in Ohio in 1820. He attended West Point Military Academy and graduated in 1840. After graduation, he served in the Army for a number of years, fighting in the Mexican-American War. In 1853, he resigned from the Army and moved to California to practice law.

Sherman was a successful lawyer, but he was also drawn to politics. He served in the California State Legislature and was elected mayor of San Francisco in 1856. However, Sherman's political career was cut short by the outbreak of the Civil War.

Civil War Service

In 1861, Sherman was appointed a brigadier general in the Union Army. He quickly rose through the ranks, and by 1864 he was commanding the Army of the Tennessee. Sherman led his army on a number of successful campaigns, including the Battle of Shiloh and the Atlanta Campaign.

In 1864, Sherman was promoted to general and given command of all Union forces in the West. He led his army on a march through Georgia and South Carolina, destroying everything in his path. Sherman's "March to the Sea" was one of the most destructive campaigns in American history.

Post-War Career

After the Civil War, Sherman served as commander of the Army of the United States. He retired from the Army in 1884 and died in 1891.

Legacy

Sherman is a controversial figure in American history. He is remembered as a brilliant military strategist, but he is also criticized for his ruthless tactics. Sherman's legacy is still debated today, but there is no doubt that he was one of the most important figures in American history.
