The town of Seaham, County Durham, England, has a long and proud history. It is a coastal town that has been shaped by the sea, and its people have always been drawn to the water. This is reflected in the town's maritime heritage, and many Seaham men have gone to sea over the years.

When war came, the men of Seaham were quick to answer the call. They served in both World War I and World War II, and they fought in all the major theaters of war. They fought with bravery and distinction, and many of them paid the ultimate price.

The stories of the Seaham men who went to war are a testament to the human cost of war. They are stories of courage, sacrifice, and resilience. They are a reminder of the importance of remembering those who have served their country.

World War I

When World War I broke out in 1914, the men of Seaham were quick to volunteer. They joined the army, the navy, and the air force, and they fought in all the major theaters of war.

One of the most famous Seaham men who fought in World War I was John Simpson Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick was a stretcher bearer in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the British armed forces, for his actions at the Battle of Gallipoli.

Kirkpatrick was one of many Seaham men who were awarded medals for their bravery in World War I. Others included:

  • Thomas William Hall, who was awarded the Military Medal for his actions at the Battle of the Somme
  • John Thomas Brown, who was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his actions at the Battle of Passchendaele
  • George Dixon, who was awarded the Military Cross for his actions at the Battle of Cambrai

In total, over 1,000 men from Seaham served in World War I. Of these, over 200 were killed in action.

World War II

When World War II broke out in 1939, the men of Seaham once again answered the call. They served in all the major theaters of war, including Europe, North Africa, and the Far East.

One of the most famous Seaham men who fought in World War II was James Eaglesham. Eaglesham was a pilot in the Royal Air Force. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions in the Battle of Britain.

Eaglesham was one of many Seaham men who were awarded medals for their bravery in World War II. Others included:

  • Robert Ernest Thompson, who was awarded the Military Medal for his actions at the Battle of El Alamein
  • John Henry Carter, who was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his actions at the Battle of Caen
  • William Henry Brown, who was awarded the Military Cross for his actions at the Battle of the Bulge

In total, over 2,000 men from Seaham served in World War II. Of these, over 300 were killed in action.

The Legacy of the Seaham Men

The Seaham men who went to war left behind a legacy of bravery, sacrifice, and resilience. Their stories are a reminder of the human cost of war and the importance of remembering those who have served their country.

Today, the Seaham men who went to war are remembered in a number of ways. There is a memorial in the town center, and there are also memorials in the local churches. The Seaham Museum has a collection of artifacts that tell the stories of the Seaham men who went to war.
