John Neihardt

John Neihardt (1881-1973) was an American poet, writer, and historian who is best known for his work on Native American history and culture. He was born in Illinois and raised in Nebraska, where he came into contact with the Lakota Sioux people. He spent many years living among the Lakota and learning about their culture and traditions.

Neihardt's most famous work is the epic poem "The Song of Hugh Glass," which tells the story of a frontiersman who was mauled by a bear and left for dead. The poem was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to raise awareness of the Lakota Sioux people.

Neihardt also wrote a number of other works about Native American history and culture, including "Black Elk Speaks," "When the Tree Flowered," and "The Indian Way." These works helped to provide a more accurate and nuanced understanding of Native American culture and history.

Philip Deloria

Philip Deloria (born 1959) is a Dakota historian and professor at Harvard University. He is the author of several books on Native American history and culture, including "Playing Indian," "Indians in Unexpected Places," and "The Oxford Handbook of Indigenous American Literature."

Deloria's work has helped to challenge traditional narratives about Native American history and culture. He argues that Native Americans are not a monolithic group, but rather a diverse group of peoples with their own unique histories and cultures. He also argues that Native Americans have played a significant role in American history and culture, and that their contributions should be recognized and celebrated.

Vine Deloria Jr.

Vine Deloria Jr. (1933-2005) was a Standing Rock Sioux theologian, historian, and activist. He was a leading figure in the American Indian Movement and a vocal advocate for Native American rights.

Deloria's work has focused on the relationship between Native Americans and the United States government. He argues that the United States government has consistently violated the rights of Native Americans and that Native Americans have a right to self-determination. He also argues that Native Americans have a unique spiritual and cultural perspective that can offer valuable insights to the world.

Black Elk Speaks

Black Elk Speaks is a book by John Neihardt that was published in 1932. The book is a record of the life and teachings of Black Elk, a Lakota Sioux holy man.

Black Elk Speaks provides a unique glimpse into the spiritual and cultural world of the Lakota Sioux people. Black Elk describes his visions and experiences, and he offers his insights on the meaning of life and the nature of the universe.

Black Elk Speaks has been praised for its beauty and wisdom, and it has become a classic work of Native American literature.

John Neihardt, Philip Deloria, Vine Deloria Jr., and Black Elk Speaks are four prominent figures in the study of Native American history and culture. Their work has helped to provide a more accurate and nuanced understanding of Native American culture and history, and it has helped to challenge traditional narratives about Native Americans.
