Mende Nazer was born in a small village in southern Sudan in 1982. Her childhood was idyllic, filled with laughter and love. But everything changed in 1992, when the Sudanese government launched a brutal campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Dinka people, to which Nazer belongs. Her village was attacked, and her family was killed. Nazer was taken captive and sold into slavery.

For the next twelve years, Nazer was subjected to unimaginable horrors. She was beaten, starved, and raped. She was forced to work long hours in the fields, and she was constantly in fear for her life. But through it all, she never gave up hope.

In 2004, Nazer finally managed to escape from slavery. She made her way to a refugee camp in Kenya, where she was reunited with her sister. With the help of the United Nations, Nazer was eventually resettled in the United States.

In 2016, Nazer published her memoir, Slave: My True Story. The book is a harrowing account of her experiences, but it is also a story of hope and triumph. Nazer's story is a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the power of hope. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of slavery, the plight of women in war-torn regions, and the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity.
