By Ezer Weizman
I was born in Tel Aviv, Palestine, in 1924. My father was a doctor, and my mother was a teacher. I had two older sisters and a younger brother. My childhood was happy and carefree. I loved playing outdoors with my friends, and I was always fascinated by airplanes.
When I was 16 years old, I joined the Haganah, the Jewish underground organization that fought for the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine. I served in the Haganah for two years, and during that time I learned how to fly and maintain aircraft.
In 1948, the State of Israel was founded, and I joined the newly formed Israel Air Force. I was one of the first fighter pilots in the IAF, and I flew combat missions in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
After the war, I continued to serve in the IAF. I commanded several fighter squadrons, and I also served as the IAF's chief of staff. In 1966, I was appointed commander of the IAF. I served as commander of the IAF during the Six-Day War in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War in 1973.
I retired from the IAF in 1974. After my retirement, I founded the Israel Air Force Aviation Classics, a museum dedicated to preserving the history of the IAF. I also served as president of the Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) from 1982 to 1987.
I am proud of my service to the State of Israel. I am also proud of the Israel Air Force Aviation Classics, which has become a world-renowned museum. I hope that my story will inspire others to follow their dreams and to make a difference in the world.
My experiences as a fighter pilot
As a fighter pilot, I flew over 1,000 combat missions. I shot down 15 enemy aircraft. I was also shot down three times, but I was always able to eject from my aircraft and survive.
I have vivid memories of my experiences as a fighter pilot. I remember the thrill of taking off from the runway and climbing into the sky. I remember the exhilaration of dogfighting with enemy aircraft. I also remember the fear of being shot down and killed.
But despite the dangers, I loved being a fighter pilot. I loved the challenge of flying and fighting. I also loved the camaraderie of my fellow pilots.
The founding of the Israel Air Force Aviation Classics
After I retired from the IAF, I founded the Israel Air Force Aviation Classics. The museum is located at Hatzerim Airbase in the Negev Desert. The museum houses a collection of over 150 aircraft, including many of the IAF's most famous aircraft.
The Israel Air Force Aviation Classics is a popular tourist destination. The museum tells the story of the IAF's history, and it also provides visitors with an opportunity to see some of the IAF's most iconic aircraft.
I am proud of the Israel Air Force Aviation Classics. The museum is a living tribute to the men and women of the IAF who have served with distinction.
My legacy
I am grateful for the opportunity to have served my country. I am also grateful for the opportunity to have founded the Israel Air Force Aviation Classics. I hope that my story will inspire others to follow their dreams and to make a difference in the world.
Ezer Weizman, a legendary fighter pilot and founder of the Israel Air Force Aviation Classics, died in 2005 at the age of 80.
