Early Life and Education

Kaetennae John Sandifer was born into slavery in Rutherford County, Tennessee, on March 1, 1827. His parents, Lewis and Rachel Sandifer, were both slaves. Kaetennae was a bright and curious child, and he showed an early interest in mechanics. He often took apart and rebuilt the farm machinery on his master's plantation.

In 1844, Kaetennae's master, John Sandifer, decided to move his family to Memphis, Tennessee. Kaetennae went with them, and he soon found work as a machinist in a local factory. He quickly became known for his skill and ingenuity, and he was soon promoted to foreman.

Inventing the Mechanical Cotton Picker

In the mid-1850s, Kaetennae began working on a mechanical cotton picker. At the time, cotton was picked by hand, which was a slow and laborious process. Kaetennae believed that a machine could be invented that would pick cotton more efficiently and quickly.

Kaetennae worked on his invention for several years, and he finally completed it in 1860. His machine was a complex device that used a series of rollers to remove the cotton from the bolls. It was the first successful mechanical cotton picker, and it revolutionized the cotton industry.

The Civil War and Reconstruction

The Civil War broke out in 1861, and Kaetennae enlisted in the Union Army. He served for four years, and he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery at the Battle of Gettysburg.
