The Filles du Roi

During the 17th century, King Louis XIV of France implemented a bold plan to populate the colony of New France (present-day Canada). He recruited young women known as Filles du Roi (King's Daughters) to marry the male settlers and establish families.

These women came from all walks of life, but they shared a common desire for adventure and a willingness to leave everything they knew behind. They were promised a dowry, a plot of land, and a husband who would provide for them.

Jeanne's Early Life

Jeanne Chevalier was born in 1663 in the small town of Angers, France. Little is known about her early life, but it is believed that she came from a modest family.

Like many young women of her time, Jeanne dreamed of a better life. When she heard about the King's plan to send women to New France, she was immediately drawn to the opportunity.

The Journey to New France

In 1683, Jeanne boarded a ship bound for New France. The journey was long and arduous, lasting several months. The women endured cramped conditions, seasickness, and the constant threat of storms.

Finally, after a perilous voyage, the ship reached the shores of Quebec City. Jeanne disembarked with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. She had arrived in a new world, a land of vast forests, mighty rivers, and endless possibilities.

Life in New France

Jeanne was quickly introduced to her future husband, a young farmer named Jacques Bourdon. The two were married shortly after their meeting.

Life in New France was harsh and unforgiving. The winters were long and cold, and the summers were short and hot. The settlers had to contend with disease, starvation, and attacks from Native American tribes.

Despite the challenges, Jeanne and Jacques worked tirelessly to build a life for themselves. They cleared land, planted crops, and raised a family.

Legacy of a Trailblazer

Jeanne Chevalier lived a long and fulfilling life in New France. She and Jacques had several children, and their descendants still live in Canada today.

Jeanne's story is a testament to the courage and resilience of the Filles du Roi. These women left their homes and families to embark on a perilous journey to an unknown land. They faced incredible hardships, but they persevered and built new lives for themselves and their children.

Jeanne Chevalier's legacy is one of strength, determination, and the enduring power of the human spirit. She is an inspiration to all who dare to dream big and forge their own paths in life.
