Turner married Mary Lou Sutton in 1905. They had three children, Thomas Wyatt Turner Jr., Mary Lou Turner, and John Sutton Turner.
Turner was a devout Christian and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Knoxville. He was also a Mason and a member of the Rotary Club.
Turner died on March 19, 1978, in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was 100 years old.
