Abdul Dire is an Oromo witness who has spoken out about the human rights abuses and atrocities committed against his people in Ethiopia. He has testified before the United Nations Human Rights Council and the United States Congress, and his story has been featured in numerous media outlets around the world.
Dire was born in the Oromia region of Ethiopia in 1987. He grew up in a small village and attended school until the age of 16. In 2003, he was arrested by Ethiopian security forces and accused of being a member of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF),a rebel group that has been fighting for the self-determination of the Oromo people.
Dire was held in prison for three years without charge or trial. During his time in prison, he was subjected to torture and other forms of ill-treatment. He was beaten, whipped, and hung upside down. He was also denied food and water for long periods of time.
In 2006, Dire was released from prison and returned to his village. However, he continued to be harassed and threatened by Ethiopian security forces. In 2008, he fled to Kenya, where he lived in exile for several years.
In 2014, Dire traveled to the United States to testify before the United Nations Human Rights Council. He spoke about the human rights abuses he had witnessed and experienced in Ethiopia. He also called on the international community to take action to stop the Ethiopian government's crackdown on the Oromo people.
Dire's testimony helped to raise awareness of the human rights situation in Ethiopia. In 2016, the United States Congress passed a resolution condemning the Ethiopian government's human rights abuses. The resolution also called for the release of political prisoners and the end of the crackdown on the Oromo people.
Dire continues to speak out about the human rights situation in Ethiopia. He is a member of the Oromo Advocacy Alliance, a coalition of organizations that work to promote the human rights of the Oromo people. He also works with the Human Rights Watch, a non-governmental organization that investigates and documents human rights abuses around the world.
Dire's story is a powerful reminder of the human cost of conflict and oppression. He is a brave man who has risked his life to speak out against injustice. His story is an inspiration to all who fight for human rights and freedom.
