Early Life and Education
Janet Louise Yellen was born on August 13, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents were Anna Ruth (née Blumenthal) and Julius Yellen, a doctor. Yellen attended Fort Hamilton High School in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and graduated from Brown University in 1967 with a degree in economics. She then earned her Ph.D. in economics from Yale University in 1971.
Yellen began her career as an assistant professor of economics at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1971. She taught at Berkeley for seven years, and during that time she also served as a visiting professor at the London School of Economics and the University of Cambridge.
Federal Reserve career
In 1977, Yellen joined the staff of the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, D.C. She served in various roles at the Fed, including as a research economist, senior economist, and division director. In 1994, she was appointed a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. She served on the Board for seven years, and during that time she played a key role in the Fed's response to the financial crisis of 2008
In 2014, President Barack Obama nominated Yellen to be Chair of the Federal Reserve. She was confirmed by the Senate by a vote of 56-26, and she became the first woman to lead the Fed.
As Chair of the Fed, Yellen has overseen the continued recovery of the U.S. economy from the Great Recession. She has also taken steps to address the rising levels of income inequality and poverty in the United States.
Personal life
Janet Yellen is married to George Akerlof, a Nobel Prize-winning economist. They have one son, Robert Akerlof.
Yellen is a lifelong Democrat. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Economic Association.
