I grew up in a small town in England. I was a good kid, but I always had a rebellious streak. When I was 18, I joined the Special Boat Service (SBS),the British equivalent of the Navy SEALs. The SBS is an elite unit that specializes in maritime counter-terrorism and special reconnaissance.

I served in the SBS for five years, and during that time I saw some things that no man should ever see. I witnessed the horrors of war firsthand, and I lost many of my friends.

After I left the SBS, I was lost. I didn't know what to do with my life. I tried to go back to civilian life, but I couldn't fit in. I was haunted by the things I had seen and done.

One day, I was approached by a private military contractor. They offered me a job as a hired gun in Iraq. I was hesitant at first, but I eventually accepted. I needed the money, and I thought it might be a way to escape my demons.

I went to Iraq and worked as a hired gun for six months. It was a dangerous job, but I was good at it. I killed a lot of people, and I saw a lot of death.

But the more I killed, the more I realized that I was becoming a monster. I was no longer the man I had been before the war. I was a cold-blooded killer.

One day, I was involved in a firefight with some insurgents. I killed several of them, but one of them got away. He was wounded, but he managed to escape.

I chased him down and cornered him in an alleyway. He was unarmed and helpless, but I couldn't bring myself to kill him. I let him go.

That was the moment when I realized that I had to change. I couldn't continue to live this life. I had to find a way to redeem myself.

I went back to England and started working with a charity that helps veterans. I also started writing a book about my experiences. I wanted to share my story with the world, and I wanted to warn others about the dangers of war.

My book was published a few years ago, and it became a bestseller. I've been interviewed by the BBC, CNN, and The New York Times. I've spoken at schools and universities all over the world.

I'm not proud of everything I did in Iraq, but I'm proud of the man I've become. I'm a survivor, and I'm a fighter. I'm not going to let the war define me. I'm going to use my experiences to make the world a better place.

I'm John Smith, and this is my story.
