Redstone attended Boston Latin School and later Harvard College, where he earned a degree in law. After graduating from Harvard Law School, he served as an attorney in the U.S. Army during World War II.
After the war, Redstone returned to Boston and began his career in the entertainment industry. He started out as a lawyer for a small theater chain and eventually became involved in the management of the theaters. In 1957, he formed National Amusements, a company that would eventually become one of the largest theater chains in the United States.
Building a Media Empire
In the 1970s, Redstone began to expand his empire beyond theaters. He acquired Viacom, a company that owned several cable television channels, including MTV and Nickelodeon. He also acquired CBS, one of the largest television networks in the United States.
Under Redstone's leadership, Viacom and CBS became two of the most successful media companies in the world. He oversaw the launch of several new channels, including Comedy Central and BET. He also expanded Viacom's international presence by acquiring companies in Europe and Asia.
A Relentless Pursuit of Success
Redstone was known for his relentless pursuit of success. He was a demanding and driven leader who pushed himself and his employees to the limit. He was also a risk-taker who was not afraid to make bold decisions.
Redstone's ambition was not without its critics. Some accused him of being ruthless and manipulative. Others said that he was too focused on profit and not enough on quality.
Legacy
Sumner Redstone died on August 11, 2020, at the age of 97. He left behind a legacy as one of the most successful media moguls in history.
Redstone's empire is now controlled by his daughter, Shari Redstone. She is the president and CEO of National Amusements and the chairman of the board of ViacomCBS.
Sumner Redstone's life and career were a testament to the power of passion and determination. He overcame humble beginnings to become one of the most successful businessmen in the world. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of entrepreneurs and business leaders.
