William J. Seymour was born in Centerville, Louisiana, in 1870. He was the son of former slaves, and he grew up in poverty. Seymour was a devout Christian, and he began preaching at a young age. In 1900, he moved to Los Angeles, where he joined the Pentecostal movement.
