Early Life and Career

Toussaint Louverture was born on May 20, 1743, in Saint-Domingue, a French colony on the island of Hispaniola. He was the son of African slaves who had been brought to Saint-Domingue from Benin. Louverture was a self-educated man who learned to read and write French and Latin. He also studied military strategy and tactics.

He joined the slave rebellion that erupted in 1791 and quickly rose through the ranks of the rebel army. Military Leadership and Political Accomplishments

In addition to his military accomplishments, Louverture was also a skilled political leader. He united the people of Haiti under his leadership and he established a provisional government that laid the foundation for the independent Haitian state. Louverture also promoted education and economic development in Haiti, and he worked to improve the lives of all Haitians.

Betrayal and Death

Despite his many accomplishments, Louverture's career ended in tragedy. In 1801, he was betrayed by his former ally, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, and was arrested by French troops. Louverture was taken to France, where he was imprisoned in a cold and damp dungeon. He died in prison on April 7, 1803, at the age of 59.
