The five daughters of Nicholas and Alexandra, the last imperial family of Russia, were born into a life of privilege and promise. They were raised in the opulent palaces of Saint Petersburg and Moscow, and educated by the best tutors in the world. They were expected to marry into the royal families of Europe and to continue the Romanov dynasty for generations to come.
But their lives took a tragic turn in 1917, when the Russian Revolution broke out. The Bolsheviks, a radical socialist group, seized power and overthrew the monarchy. Nicholas and Alexandra were arrested and executed, and their children were sent to live in a remote village in Siberia.
In 1918, the Bolsheviks decided to execute the children as well. They were taken to a basement in the village of Yekaterinburg and shot. Their bodies were then thrown down a mineshaft and covered with debris.
