The Author

Baha al-Din Ibn Shaddad was born in Mosul, Iraq, in 1145. He was a Sunni Muslim scholar and historian. He studied in Damascus and Baghdad, and eventually became a professor of law at the University of Mosul. In 1174, he was appointed as Saladin's personal secretary. He accompanied Saladin on his campaigns and was present at many of the most important events of his reign.

Ibn Shaddad's history of Saladin is based on his own observations and experiences, as well as on interviews with Saladin's companions and officials. It is a detailed and comprehensive account of Saladin's life, from his early days in Iraq to his death in Damascus in 1193.

The Book

The Rare and Excellent History of Saladin is divided into two parts. The first part covers Saladin's early life and career, up to his conquest of Egypt in 1171. The second part covers his reign as sultan of Egypt and Syria, including his wars with the Crusaders and his death in 1193.
