Captain Henry Mowat was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland in 1734. He joined the British Army in 1755 and served in the French and Indian War. In 1763, he was promoted to captain and appointed to the 15th Regiment of Foot.

Military Exploits during the American Revolutionary War
Battle of Fort Stanwix
In 1777, Mowat commanded a British force that besieged Fort Stanwix, a key American outpost in upstate New York. The siege lasted for three weeks, and Mowat's forces eventually forced the American garrison to surrender.
Siege of Quebec
In 1775, Mowat led a force of British marines in the Siege of Quebec. The siege lasted for five months, and Mowat's forces eventually forced the American forces to retreat.
Capture and Imprisonment
In 1779, Mowat was captured by American forces while leading a raid on the town of Castine, Maine. He was imprisoned in Boston for two years, and was eventually exchanged for an American prisoner of war.
Post-War Career
After the war, Mowat returned to Scotland and retired from the army. He died in Edinburgh in 1819.
