Chandrashekhar Azad, born on July 23, 1906, was a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement. He became a symbol of courage and resistance against British rule and left an enduring legacy as a fearless revolutionary. Azad's unwavering dedication to the cause of India's liberation, combined with his exceptional leadership skills and strategic planning, made him a formidable force in the fight for freedom.

Early Life

Born in the small village of Bhavra in the Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh, Azad came from a humble background. His father, Pandit Sitaram Tiwari, was a Sanskrit scholar, and his mother, Jagrani Devi, was a devout woman. Azad's early education took place in his village, where he developed a keen interest in religious texts and Indian history.

Joining the Freedom Struggle

At a young age, Azad was deeply influenced by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and joined the non-cooperation movement in 1920. However, he soon became disillusioned with Gandhi's non-violent approach to resistance and began to believe that armed struggle was necessary for India to achieve its independence.

In 1924, Azad joined the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA),a revolutionary organization led by Bhagat Singh. Azad quickly rose through the ranks of the HSRA and became one of its most trusted leaders.

Kakori Conspiracy

In 1925, Azad played a key role in the Kakori conspiracy, a daring train robbery that targeted a government treasury. The robbery was successful, but several HSRA members were arrested, including Azad. Azad managed to escape and became one of the most wanted men in India.

Death of Chandrashekhar Azad

For the next five years, Azad led a life on the run, evading capture by the British authorities. He continued to organize revolutionary activities and inspire young Indians to join the fight for freedom.

On February 27, 1931, Azad was surrounded by British police in Alfred Park, Allahabad. In a fierce gunfight, Azad killed three policemen before being shot and killed himself. He was just 24 years old at the time of his death.
