John Davison Rockefeller was born on July 8, 1839, in Richford, New York. He was the son of William Avery Rockefeller, a logger and farmer, and Eliza Davison Rockefeller. Rockefeller had five siblings, two of whom died in infancy. The family was poor, and Rockefeller often had to help his father with the farm work.

In 1853, the Rockefeller family moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Rockefeller attended public school and then worked as a bookkeeper for several years. In 1859, he started his own business, a commission house that bought and sold produce. The business was successful, and Rockefeller soon became a wealthy man.
