The Autobiography of W.E.B. Du Bois is a classic of American literature that chronicles the life of one of the most important figures in the African American civil rights movement. Du Bois was a sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, and author. He was a founding member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and served as its first director of research. Du Bois's autobiography is a powerful and moving account of his life and the challenges he faced as an African American in the United States.

Early Life and Education

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, on February 23, 1868. He was the son of Alfred Du Bois, a former slave, and Mary Silvina Burghardt, a free woman of color. Du Bois's parents instilled in him a strong sense of pride and self-reliance. Du Bois attended Fisk University and Harvard University, where he studied sociology and history. He received his doctorate from Harvard in 1895 and became the first African American to receive a Ph.D. from the university.

The Niagara Movement and the NAACP

In 1905, Du Bois helped to found the Niagara Movement, an organization of African American intellectuals and activists who advocated for civil rights and equality. In 1909, Du Bois became the director of research for the NAACP. He led the NAACP's campaign for civil rights legislation and helped to raise awareness of the plight of African Americans in the United States.

The Crisis

In 1910, Du Bois founded The Crisis, the official magazine of the NAACP. The Crisis was a powerful voice for the civil rights movement and published articles by some of the most important African American intellectuals of the time. Du Bois used The Crisis to advocate for a variety of causes, including voting rights, anti-lynching legislation, and educational opportunities for African Americans.

Later Life and Legacy

Du Bois continued to be a leading voice for civil rights throughout his life. He wrote several books and articles on race and social justice, and he lectured extensively on these topics. Du Bois died in Accra, Ghana, on August 27, 1963, at the age of 95. He is considered one of the most important figures in the African American civil rights movement.
