Charles Sobhraj, the notorious serial killer who terrorized Europe and South Asia in the 1970s, was a master of disguise, deception, and manipulation. His crimes left a lasting impact on the lives of his victims and the communities he targeted.

Born in Saigon, Vietnam in 1944, Charles Sobhraj was a charismatic and intelligent young man who quickly developed a talent for forgery and deception. He spent his early years traveling around Europe, honing his skills and committing petty crimes.

In 1975, Sobhraj arrived in Thailand and quickly became involved in the local drug trade. He met and befriended Marie-Andrée Leclerc, a French Canadian woman who would become his accomplice and lover. Together, they formed a criminal gang that preyed on Western tourists.

Sobhraj's modus operandi was to befriend his victims, gain their trust, and then either rob them or kill them. He would often use drugs or alcohol to incapacitate his victims and then strangle them. He and Leclerc would then dispose of the bodies by burning them or burying them.

In 1975, Sobhraj and Leclerc murdered a young American tourist named Teresa Knowlton in Thailand. This murder brought their criminal activities to the attention of the authorities, and they were eventually arrested and charged with murder. However, they escaped from prison in 1976 and fled to India.

In India, Sobhraj and Leclerc continued their reign of terror, murdering at least 20 more people. They targeted Western tourists, often posing as gem dealers or religious leaders to gain their trust. Their victims came from all over the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Canada, and Australia.

Sobhraj was eventually captured in India in 1976 and sentenced to life imprisonment. He was released from prison in 1997 and returned to France. However, he was arrested again in 2003 and extradited to Nepal to face charges for the murder of two American tourists in 1975. He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

Charles Sobhraj's crimes left a lasting legacy of fear and terror in the countries he targeted. His victims were young, innocent travelers who were brutally murdered by a man who showed them no mercy. His story is a cautionary tale about the dangers of trusting strangers and the importance of staying safe while traveling abroad.
