Early Life and Education

Rod Coronado was born in 1948 in Los Angeles, California. He grew up in a working-class family and attended public schools. As a child, Coronado spent much of his time exploring the nearby Santa Monica Mountains. He developed a deep love for the natural world and a passion for protecting it.

Coronado attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied environmental science. He graduated in 1970 and began working as a park ranger in the National Park Service.

Activism and Accomplishments

In the early 1970s, Coronado became involved in the environmental movement. He joined the Sierra Club and began working to protect the Santa Monica Mountains from development. In 1978, he founded the Santa Monica Mountains Task Force, which successfully campaigned for the creation of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

Coronado's work has extended far beyond the Santa Monica Mountains. He has helped to create several other national parks and monuments, including the Channel Islands National Park, the Mojave National Preserve, and the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. He has also worked to protect endangered species, such as the California condor and the desert tortoise.

Coronado's activism has been recognized with numerous awards. In 2016, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. He has also received the Sierra Club's John Muir Award and the National Audubon Society's Audubon Medal.
