My friend, the mercenary

I met my friend, the mercenary, in a bar in a small town in the middle of nowhere. He was sitting at a table by himself, drinking a beer and staring into space. I sat down next to him and we started talking.

He told me his story. He had grown up in a poor family in a small town in a third world country. He had joined the army to get away from the poverty and violence, and to make a better life for himself. He had served in several combat zones, and had seen some of the worst that the world had to offer.

He had been in combat so often that he had lost count of the number of people he had killed. He had seen his friends die, and he had been forced to do things that he would never have thought he was capable of.

He had been diagnosed with PTSD, and he was struggling to adjust to life back home. He had nightmares, flashbacks, and he was constantly on edge. He had lost his job, and he was estranged from his family.

He was a broken man, but he was still a good man. He was kind and compassionate, and he had a strong sense of justice. He wanted to make the world a better place, but he didn't know how.

I listened to his story, and I was moved by his courage and his resilience. I wanted to help him, but I didn't know how. I didn't know much about PTSD, and I didn't know what to say.

I just sat and listened, and I let him talk. And as he talked, I started to understand what he was going through. I started to understand the pain that he was in, and I started to understand the challenges that he faced.

I didn't know how to fix him, but I could be there for him. I could be his friend, and I could listen to him. And maybe, just maybe, that would be enough.

We talked for a long time that night, and we talked for many nights after that. I got to know him better, and I came to admire him more and more. He was a strong man, a good man, and a man who had been through hell.

He was my friend, the mercenary, and I was proud to call him my friend.

One day, he decided to leave town. He said that he needed to find his own way, and that he couldn't do it in this town. He said that he would never forget me, and that he would always be grateful for my friendship.

I gave him a hug, and I wished him well. I knew that I would never see him again, but I would never forget him.

My friend, the mercenary, taught me a lot about life. He taught me about the horrors of war, and the challenges of finding redemption after witnessing the worst that the world has to offer.

He also taught me about the importance of friendship, and the power of hope. He showed me that even in the darkest times, there is always hope. And that even the most broken people can be healed.

My friend, the mercenary, was a good man. He was a hero. And he was my friend.
