Plot Summary

The play is set in Messina, Italy. Claudio, a young Florentine lord, has come to court Hero, the daughter of Leonato, the governor of Messina. Hero is a beautiful and virtuous young woman, and Claudio is immediately smitten with her. However, Claudio's friend Don John, the illegitimate brother of Don Pedro, the Prince of Aragon, is jealous of Claudio's happiness.
