Fishman was born in Moscow in 1958. His father was a translator and his mother was a teacher. Fishman grew up in a close-knit Jewish family. He attended a special school for gifted children and began writing poetry at a young age.
In 1978, Fishman's family emigrated to the United States. They settled in Brooklyn, New York. Fishman had to learn English and adapt to a new culture. He eventually attended Columbia University, where he studied comparative literature.
After graduating from Columbia, Fishman worked as a journalist and translator. He also published several books of poetry and prose. In the House of the Interpreter is his first memoir.
The memoir is divided into two parts. The first part tells the story of Fishman's childhood in the Soviet Union. The second part tells the story of his immigration to the United States.
The first part of the memoir is full of vivid descriptions of Soviet life. Fishman writes about the cramped apartments, the long lines for food, and the constant fear of the KGB. He also writes about the love and support he received from his family and friends.
The second part of the memoir is full of hope and optimism. Fishman writes about the challenges he faced as an immigrant, but he also writes about the opportunities he found in the United States. He writes about his education, his career, and his family.
In the House of the Interpreter is a powerful and moving memoir. It is a story of survival, resilience, and hope. It is a story that will resonate with anyone who has ever experienced the challenges of immigration.
