Early Life and Education

Moses Katemba Kibirige was born in 1946 in Kyotera, a small village in Uganda. His father died when he was young, and his mother struggled to support the family. Despite the challenges, Kibirige excelled in school and was determined to pursue a medical career.

After completing his secondary education, Kibirige was accepted to Makerere University Medical School in Kampala, Uganda. However, he faced discrimination and prejudice from some of his professors and classmates because of his rural background. Nevertheless, Kibirige persisted and graduated with honors in 1971.

Medical Career in Uganda

After graduating from medical school, Kibirige worked in rural Uganda, where he witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of poverty and disease. He dedicated himself to improving healthcare for his people and established several health clinics in underserved communities.

In 1978, Kibirige became the first Ugandan surgeon to perform a kidney transplant. This groundbreaking surgery was a major milestone in Ugandan healthcare and demonstrated Kibirige's exceptional skill and dedication.

Educational Pursuit in America

Kibirige's work in Uganda caught the attention of Dr. Michael DeBakey, a renowned American heart surgeon. In 1979, DeBakey invited Kibirige to join him at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, for further training in cardiovascular surgery.

Kibirige spent several years in Houston, honing his skills under the tutelage of Dr. DeBakey. He was fascinated by the advanced medical technology and techniques available in the United States and was determined to bring this knowledge back to Africa.

Return to Uganda and Humanitarian Work

In 1986, Kibirige returned to Uganda and established the Uganda Heart Institute, the first specialized cardiac center in the country. He also founded the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF),a non-profit organization dedicated to improving healthcare in Africa.

Kibirige has dedicated his life to providing free or low-cost medical care to the poor and marginalized. He has organized numerous medical missions to underserved communities and has trained countless doctors and nurses.
