Henry IV was born on April 3, 1366, in Bolingbroke Castle, Lincolnshire. He was the eldest son of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, and Blanche of Lancaster. Henry's father was a powerful figure in English politics, and his mother was a pious and devout woman.

Henry received a well-rounded education in the court of his father. He studied Latin, French, history, and law. He also learned how to hunt, hawk, and joust. Henry was a skilled warrior and a charismatic leader.

In 1399, Henry's cousin, King Richard II, was overthrown by a group of nobles led by Henry's father. Henry was crowned king on October 13, 1399, in Westminster Abbey.

Henry's reign was off to a rocky start. He faced several rebellions from supporters of Richard II. Henry also had to deal with the ongoing Hundred Years' War with France.

Henry IV's Reign

Despite the challenges he faced, Henry IV proved to be a capable and effective ruler. He restored stability to the kingdom and expanded English territory in France. Henry was also a patron of the arts and sciences. He founded the Royal College of Music and the University of Cambridge.

Henry IV was a devout Catholic. He supported the Church and encouraged religious reform. He also founded several hospitals and schools.

Henry IV died on March 20, 1413, at Westminster Palace. He was succeeded by his son, Henry V.
