Microsoft Corporation
In 1975, Gates and Allen founded Microsoft Corporation, which initially developed and sold software for the Altair 8800 microcomputer. In 1980, Microsoft released the MS-DOS operating system, which became the standard operating system for personal computers.
In 1985, Microsoft released Windows 1.0, the first graphical user interface for MS-DOS. Windows became a huge success and helped to make Microsoft one of the most successful companies in the world.
Gates served as Microsoft's CEO until 2000, when he stepped down to focus on his philanthropic work. He remained chairman of the company until 2014.
Philanthropy
Gates is one of the world's most generous philanthropists. In 2000, he and his wife, Melinda Gates, founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which is dedicated to improving global health and education. The foundation has given away billions of dollars to support a variety of causes, including the eradication of malaria, the development of new vaccines, and the improvement of education in developing countries.
In 2010, Gates signed the Giving Pledge, a commitment by wealthy individuals to give away the majority of their wealth to charitable causes.

Gates married Melinda French in 1994. They have three children: Jennifer, Rory, and Phoebe. The family lives in a large estate in Medina, Washington.
