Donald Fairley was born in Scotland in 1895, and Dorothy Fairley was born in England in 1897. They met while studying at the University of Edinburgh, and were married in 1922. Shortly after their wedding, they traveled to China to begin their missionary work.

The Fairleys spent the next 10 years working in China, first in the city of Hankow and then in the countryside. They taught English, preached the gospel, and provided medical care to the local people. They also established a number of schools and orphanages.

In 1932, the Fairleys were forced to leave China due to the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War. They returned to Scotland, where they continued to work with Chinese students and refugees.

In 1947, the Fairleys moved to Canada, where they served as missionaries to the Chinese community in Toronto. They founded the Chinese United Church, which is still active today.

The Fairleys retired from missionary work in 1962, but they continued to be involved in the Chinese community in Toronto. Donald Fairley died in 1975, and Dorothy Fairley died in 1984.

The Jaffray Collection of Missionary Papers and Photographs provides a unique glimpse into the lives and work of these dedicated individuals. The collection includes over 500 photographs, as well as letters, diaries, and other documents. These materials offer valuable insights into the history of Christian missions in the early 20th century.

The Jaffray Collection is a valuable resource for researchers interested in the history of Christian missions, the history of China, and the history of the Chinese community in Canada. The collection is also a testament to the dedication and sacrifice of Donald and Dorothy Fairley, who spent their lives serving others.
