Donald "Don" Fulk was born on August 13, 1926, in Lodi, California. As a child, he exhibited a strong work ethic and determination. He excelled in sports, particularly baseball, and aspired to become a professional player.

Fulk was severely injured in the blast, sustaining a spinal cord injury that paralyzed him from the waist down. He was evacuated to a hospital ship and then transferred to the United States for further treatment.
