I never thought I would end up joining the Hong Kong Marine Police. I'm English, for goodness sake! But here I am, a few years later, and I can honestly say it's been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
It all started when I was working as a police officer in London. I was always drawn to the water, and I loved the idea of working on a boat. So when I saw an advert for the Hong Kong Marine Police, I decided to apply.
I was lucky enough to be accepted, and I arrived in Hong Kong in 2015. I was immediately struck by the beauty of the city, and by the warmth of the people. I was also impressed by the professionalism of the Marine Police.
The Marine Police is responsible for policing the waters of Hong Kong, which includes the harbor, the outlying islands, and the territorial waters. The force has a wide range of responsibilities, including search and rescue, law enforcement, and counter-terrorism.
I was assigned to a patrol boat, and my duties included patrolling the waters, responding to calls for assistance, and conducting searches. I also had the opportunity to work on a variety of other vessels, including fast response boats, dive boats, and even a helicopter.
One of the highlights of my time with the Marine Police was the opportunity to work on the Tall Ship "Jing Ying". The Jing Ying is a replica of a Qing Dynasty junk, and it is used for training and ceremonial purposes. I was fortunate enough to sail on the Jing Ying to Taiwan and Japan, and it was an amazing experience.
Another highlight was the opportunity to participate in the annual Dragon Boat Festival. The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese festival that is celebrated in Hong Kong with great enthusiasm. I was part of a Marine Police team that raced in the festival, and we won! It was a great feeling to be part of such a vibrant and colorful event.
Of course, there were also challenges. The work could be physically demanding, and the hours were often long. I also had to deal with the occasional typhoon or storm. But overall, I loved my time with the Marine Police.
I learned a great deal about policing, about Hong Kong, and about myself. I made some lifelong friends, and I had some amazing experiences. I am proud to have served with the Hong Kong Marine Police, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Here are some tips for anyone who is considering joining the Hong Kong Marine Police:
- Be prepared for a physically demanding job.
- Be prepared to work long hours.
- Be prepared to deal with the occasional typhoon or storm.
- Be prepared to learn a new culture and a new way of life.
- Be prepared to have some amazing experiences.
If you are up for the challenge, then I encourage you to apply. The Hong Kong Marine Police is a great place to work, and it is an experience that you will never forget.
